National Pool Lifeguard Qualification

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the most widely recognised Lifeguard Qualification in the UK with over 33,000 Lifeguards gaining the NPLQ every year. This course is an excellent way to start working in the leisure industry and provides valuable skills which can be used throughout your life.





The following topics will be covered to complete the course:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Automated External Defibrillators (AED's)

  • First Aid

  • The Lifeguard, the Law, Regulations and Codes of Practice

  • The Swimming Pool and the Role of the Lifeguard

  • Normal and Emergency Action Plans

  • Diving and Jumping in Swimming Pools

  • Provide and Use of Play Equipment, Flumes, Waterslides

  • and other Water Features in Swimming Pools





Every candidate must be 16+ years (prior to assessment), be able to commit to the 40 training hours required and meet the following basic fitness criteria:

  • Jump/dive into deep water 

  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds 

  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back 

  • In deep water, tread water for at least 30 seconds 

  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool 

  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps





The NPLQ course costs £275 per person and includes the assessment and course materials.
