Affirmations

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements – usually short and powerful – that when repeated to oneself can help to overcome negative thought patterns and change behaviour. In much the same way that repetitive physical exercise can change and improve our physical health and appearance, the repetition of affirmations can help to reprogram our thoughts and in doing so bring about change to the way we act.

How can they be used?

In any area of your life that you would like to see positive change, affirmations may be useful. For example, improving confidence, self-esteem, controlling negative thoughts and emotions, overcoming bad habits, and improving productivity levels. This can be applied to your personal and professional life alike.

The power of affirmations lies in the number of times you repeat them. They should be repeated as often as possible – for example, write them down and place them somewhere you would see them every morning; on your bathroom mirror perhaps or the refrigerator door. Say them out loud to yourself, setting reminders on your cell phone to prompt you to repeat them at intervals throughout the day. Try to train yourself to repeat your affirmations when you are about to engage in negative thoughts or behaviours that you may be trying to overcome.

These tips may help you to write your affirmation statements:

  • Decide on your goals or particular areas of your life that you want to change or improve on
  • Your affirmations should be believable and achievable to help you stay motivated
  • Rewrite any negative language using positive words
  • Use present tense for your affirmations
  • Make sure the phrases you choose are personal and emotional in order to make them more meaningful

Some examples of affirmations are:

I am successful!

I can achieve anything I put my mind to!

I have all the skills and confidence needed to complete this project.

I bring my positive attitude and creativity with me everywhere I go.

I am truly happy and content.

I enjoy my life and am grateful for all I have.

I enjoy getting stronger/fitter/faster.

Although affirmations will always be personal and specific according to what you wish to achieve, these examples may provide ideas and inspiration to get you started on your journey towards positive change.
